MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Chase Griffin scored a career-best 34 points, including eight in overtime, to lift Pepperdine to an 89-82 victory over Santa Clara Monday.
Griffin, who scored three 3-pointers, shot 11 of 16 from the field for Pepperdine (8-22, 4-10 West Coast). Kingsley Costain had 12 points, all on 3-pointers, and Shane Griffin added 10 for the Waves.
John Bryant had a career-best 26 points and 13 rebounds for Santa Clara (20-9, 10-4). Scott Dougherty scored 16 points, all in the second half, while Sean Denison and Danny Pariseau added 15 points apiece for the Broncos.
The Broncos trailed by nine points at halftime and by 13 early in the second half before mounting a comeback. SCU's comeback eventually got them a five-point lead with five minutes remaining, but the Waves came back.
Two Brody Angley free throws with 17 seconds left put SCU up by three. The Waves Gregg Barlow then found Willie Galick for a lay-up under the basket. Galick was fouled on the play and hit the free throw to tie the game.
Angley took the inbounds pass and sped upcourt before shooting a mid-range jumper that hit the back iron and the game went to overtime.
In overtime, Pepperdine got out to a five-point lead, but SCU battled back to get within one on two free throws by Pariseau. However, the Waves scored seven of the game's last nine points to pull out the win.
With the loss Santa Clara finished the season in second place in the WCC. The Broncos will play their first game of the WCC Tournament on Sunday, March 4 at 8:00 p.m. PT in the semifinals. The team will not learn its opponent until Saturday night.
