SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Two rain showers in a six-hour period, including one at the start of this morning's action, forced cancellation of the third and final round of the 59th annual Western Intercollegiate men's golf tournament. The University of Oregon, the leader after 36 holes of the team competition, and J.J. Scurich of Cal Poly, tops among the 90 players in the field, were declared champion and medalist, respectively.
"The greens became completely saturated and made them unplayable," San Jose State coach and tournament director John Dormann said this morning. "With the accumulation of rain from the last week, there was nowhere for the water to go."
In college golf, 36 competition holes qualify as a countable tournament for season records and post-season consideration. In Monday's action, Santa Clara carded rounds of 304 and 308 for a 612 total, 52 strokes over par. The Broncos were led by Jong Yoon, who carded a 72-74--146 and placed 16th, six strokes over par for his fifth top-25 finish of the season. John Colyar followed with a 78-75--153 to place 58th, and Jonathan Edwards was two strokes behind Colyar to place 70th with a 79-76--155. Michael Nicoletti scored a 75-83--158 to tie for 78th and Eric Lillibridge added an 80-84--164, good for 89th place.
Oregon finished with a total of 582 on the par-70, 6,445-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course, besting Kansas by two strokes. UCLA (586), Stanford (589) and UC Irvine (590) round out the top-five finishers. Host San Jose State finished seventh at 592.
Cal Poly's J.J. Scurich finished as the only player under par with his 138. UCLA's David Im, at even-par 140, was second. Kevin Ward of Kansas and Matt Ma of Oregon tied for third at 141. Long Beach State's Jeremy Keller fired a hole-in-one on the eighth hole in Monday's afternoon round en route to a 67, the day's low score, and tied with Garrett Sapp of UC Irvine for fifth place at 142.
The Broncos' spring season is quickly coming to a close, with only three more events on the regular season slate. Santa Clara returns to action next week at the UC Santa Barbara Bit Invitational, hosted in Lompoc, and follows with the West Coast Conference Championship in Copperopolis April 11-12. The Broncos will conclude their regular season at the Stanford-hosted U.S. Intercollegiate April 16-17.
