LOMPOC, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's golf team completed day one of the West Coast Conference Golf Championships on Monday at La Purisima Golf Course. Five Broncos played two rounds, and after 36 holes, SCU finds itself in sixth place, just nine shots out of second place. Senior Joon Yong is currently ninth in the individual standings after shooting a one over par for the day. The Broncos had some excellent individual performances and used a strong finish in the afternoon round to keep themselves in the hunt. Six teams are separated by just 12 shots heading into day two.
In the morning, senior Eric Lillibridge led the way for SCU with an impressive round of 73, just one shot behind the tournament's low round of the morning. Yoon also had a solid opening round of 75. Juniors Tim Lynch and Blair Myers shot 77 and 78 respectively, while freshman Jimmy Cacho shot an 83 in his first WCC Championship action. As a team, SCU shot a 303 and was tied for fifth heading into the afternoon.
Despite playing in excellent weather conditions, the Broncos got off to a slow start in the second round to drop to sixth. Lillibridge suffered a wrist injury on the front nine that caused him to drop to an 83 for his second round. However, the rest of the team picked it up on the back nine in round two and the team ended up with a two-stroke improvement over the first round, carding a 301.
Cacho shook off his tough first round and posted a 73 to tie Yoon for the team's low round of the afternoon. Lynch and Myers equaled their first round scores in the afternoon as SCU finished +28 for the day, three shots behind San Diego for the fifth spot.
The Broncos will play one final round at La Purisima on Tuesday to determine their final WCC finish.
