Long Beach, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's golf team got their first tournament of the season under their belts on Friday, finishing the Del Walker Intercollegiate in a tie for 9th place with an aggregate score of 873 (293, 291, 289), +21 for the tournament.
Despite the 9th place finish, the Broncos did some good things individually. In Thursday's rounds, Blair Myers and Garrett Logan each posted rounds of 70 (-1), and Kellen Moss saved his second round with an eagle on the par 5 18th hole to finish the day with two rounds of 74 (+3).
Heading into the final round, the Broncos were tied for 11th place as a team and did well to pick up ground. Jong Yoon turned in the best round of the day, best Bronco round for the tournament, and tied for best round overall with a 68 (-3), to finish in a tie for 16th place, individually. Up until the final two holes on Friday afternoon, Yoon was at -5 after four straight birdies on the back nine. If not for bogeys on 17 and 18, Yoon might have had sole possession of the best round of the entire tournament.
St. Mary's and the University of Arkansas left the tournament as co-champions with an aggregate score of 856, +4 for the tournament. Conference opponent San Diego came in five strokes off the lead in third place, and cross-town rival San Jose State came in a stroke behind them in fourth place.
Next on the schedule for the Broncos is the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by Cal which will be played at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.

Quotes:
Head coach Rob Miller, on tournament: "It was just one of those tournaments where nobody really put it together. Individually they guys had some good rounds, and we got a little better each round, which was good. We just put up some large numbers on a few holes."
Miller, on team's performance: "It's tough because there weren't too many strokes separating the top ten teams. Everybody had some good shots and some that they didn't hit so well, so in the end, everyone had something positive to take away from the tournament."
Miller, on his team: "(Jong) Yoon just hit the ball great today. He could have finished at -5, but he just couldn't finish it off. (Eric) Lillibridge putted very well, and Kellen Moss played solidly except for just one hole. Yesterday, Garrett Logan and Blair Meyers each put up -1 rounds."
Jong Yoon, on his final round: "I just played extremely well today. My ball striking was very good. I had some trouble with the putter yesterday and today I did a lot better."
Yoon, on the course: "It was a really nice course, kind of the old-fashioned style where the holes are close together with lots of trees lining the fairways."
Yoon, on team's performance: "We're going through some growing pains right now. We've got a young team and this was a great learning experience for us. It was great to finally get a tournament under our belts."
