FAIRFAX, Calif. --The Santa Clara men's golf team concluded the Alister MacKenzie Invitational Tuesday afternoon, and finished in 8th place with a combined score of 863 (288, 280, 295), +11 for the tournament.

Junior Blair Myers led the way for the Broncos, turning in a final round of 72 to finish the tournament at -4, and in a tie for fifth place. Myers was tied for fifth place yesterday, after turning in a second round score of 66, his best round of the 2006-07 season. In Tuesday's round, he did well to limit his bogeys and remain in fifth place despite very difficult pin placements.

Freshmen Jimmy Cacho and Scott Travers got their first tournaments under their belts. For Cacho, the tournament was in a familiar setting. Coming from nearby Green Valley, Calif., Cacho had played at the Meadow Club throughout high school, which definitely helped him calm the nerves brought on by playing in his first collegiate tournament. Veterans Jong Yoon and Kellen Moss had rough days Tuesday, both turning in 75s.

As a team, Santa Clara made very good progress. They improved their combined score by ten strokes from the Del Walker Intercollegiate a month ago, and did so on a course that was considerably more difficult. But consistency was the key to success, and only Blair Myers was able to really keep the good times rolling, which was accomplished in part with his strong play on the greens. Even in spite of the team's up and down performances, everyone was able to battle back and turn in respectable rounds. On three separate occasions, freshman Jimmy Cacho was able bounce back from a bogey by sinking a birdie on the very next hole.

As expected, tournament host California emerged victorious with a combined score of 826 (-26), followed by cross-town rival San Jose State, who took 2nd place with a combined score of 842 (-10).

Next week, Santa Clara will travel to Louisiana and make their first appearance at the Squirecreek Intercollegiate, hosted by Louisiana Tech beginning Monday, October 16th.
