Bronco Men's Tennis Opens Dual Season On Saturday At Home

Jan. 19, 2007

The Santa Clara men's tennis team begins its dual match schedule this weekend as the Broncos host UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis at the Degheri Tennis Center on Saturday. The Broncos and the Banana Slugs get the weekend started at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Broncos and the Aggies at 12:30 p.m. The Broncos will hope to continue the success that they had last weekend at the Aztec Invitational where they posted a winning record against No. 49 San Diego State and No. 56 Arizona State.

Santa Clara has not lost to UC Santa Cruz or UC Davis for 10 seasons. Last season, the Broncos won a hard-fought 4-3 match against the Banana Slugs before overpowering the Aggies 5-0 in the second match.

Men's Tennis Weekly Notes:

Junior Transfer Picks Up His First Win
Robert Gallman defeated Arizona State's Murilo Souza 6-3, 6-3 at last weekend's Aztec Invitational to pick up his first win as a member of the Broncos. Gallman who missed the fall due to an injury, is now healthy and back in the lineup.

Rasmussen Named Tournament Winner
Bobby Rasmussen had a phenomenal weekend in both singles and doubles matches at the Aztec Invitational last week. Completing the tournament undefeated, Rasmussen was 3-0 in his singles matches and teamed with Jan Macek to finish 3-0 in doubles. Rasmussen was named one of the singles' winners along with Matt Brooklyn of Arizona State, while Rasmussen and Macek were the doubles winners.

Santa Clara with the Home Court Advantage
This season the Broncos men's tennis team has the advantage of playing at home for a majority of their matches. SCU has 16 home matches this season and only nine on the road. The team begins with three straight matches at home before hitting the road for a five-game road trip at the beginning of February. The team posted an 8-3 record at home in 2006.

Bronco Freshman Beginning His First Spring Season
Jay Wong is beginning his first spring season, and the talented frosh is learning what it is like to play collegiate tennis. Wong won two matches in the Aztec Invitational and leads the team with 12 singles wins this year. Saturday's matches will be his first taste of dual matches.

Doubles Teams Ended Weekend Successfully
The Broncos had a great finish to the Aztec Invitational in doubles. Three out of the four doubles teams won their matches against San Diego State and Arizona State on Jan. 14 to give SCU six doubles wins for the weekend. On Sunday, Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields won 9-7 over Timu/Ceban of San Diego State, while Gallman and Brian Brogan defeated Brooklyn/Marsh 8-5 from Arizona State. Macek and Rasmussen completed the strong day with their third doubles win of the weekend, beating Dikhardt and Sabo of San Diego State 9-8 (4).

Brothers
Brian Brogan's brother, Patrick, is a member of the Arizona State tennis team. While the brothers did not play head to head last weekend at the Aztec Invitational, the Broncos and Sun Devils did square off in the tournament. Tommy Hicks defeated Patrick Brogan 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday in Patrick's only singles match against the Broncos. The brothers' teams will go head-to-head one more time this year when SCU travels to Arizona to play the Sun Devils in a dual match on Feb. 9.
