Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team started off the year with a win on Saturday morning against UC Santa Cruz at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos defeated the Banana Slugs 4-1 behind another strong performance from Bobby Rasmussen, who clinched the doubles point along with Jan Macek and then clinched the match with a singles win at the No. 5 spot. Brian Brogan and Jay Wong also won singles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions respectively, while No. 1 doubles team Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields won their doubles match 8-4.
In the clinching doubles match, Rasmussen and Macek recovered from a 5-2 deficit in the tiebreaker to win the breaker 8-6 to claim a 9-8 win. In singles, Wong was the first player off the court with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jared Kamel, giving Wong 13 wins on the season. Brogan followed soon after with a strong win over Jeff Fong 6-1, 6-3.
"It was a good start for us and we are happy to get a win in the first match," said head coach George Husack. "We had some ups and downs out there but the whole team competed well. We just need to maintain our energy level a bit better.
Jay (Wong) and Brian (Brogan) played very aggressively today and earned some excellent results. Also, Kevin (McQuaid) and Blane (Shields) had a good day in doubles and appear to be in good form again after some injuries."
