Freshman Jay Wong Victorious in First Collegiate Tournament

Santa Clara, Calif. - Freshman Jay Wong burst onto the Santa Clara University tennis scene this weekend at the Bronco Classic as he captured his first singles title in his first collegiate tournament. The San Jose native captured two victories on Sunday to win the Flight B singles tournament championship. Wong defeated Warrick Foy of Sacramento State in the semifinals 6-0; 6-2, before beating Stanford's Chris Rasmussen 6-2; 6-4 to win the title.

In other action on Sunday, Tommy Hicks narrrowly missed a chance to face Wong in the final, dropping a three-set match to Rasmussen in the semifinals of Flight B 6-0; 0-6; 6-3. Junior Blane Shields also fell in the semifinals of his bracket, falling 6-3; 6-4 in Flight C to Mike Reiser of UC Davis.

Sophomore Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong won his final match of the weekend as he closed out Mark Vartebedian of UC Santa Cruz in two hotly contested sets.

Flight B Final:

Flight C Semifinal:
Mike Reiser, UC Davis def. Blane Shields, SCU 6-3; 6-4

Flight C Consolation:
Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong, SCU def. Mark Vartebedian, UC Santa Cruz 6-4; 7-6(5)

The Broncos continue their fall season next weekend as they travel to Fresno to participate in the Bulldog Classic on the campus of Fresno State from Oct. 13 - 15.
