SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis enters the meat of the West Coast Conference season with plenty of momentum coming off a pair of impressive wins over the weekend. The Broncos play a pair of WCC matches on the road at Saint Mary's on Friday and at Pacific on Saturday.
Santa Clara (9-3, 0-1 WCC) beat Fresno State, 4-3 and swept Marquette, 7-0 this past weekend to extend its win streak to five matches.
"One of the major standouts from the weekend was our doubles play. It's the two best doubles point wins we've had all season," said Broncos head coach Niall Angus.
Playing at the top doubles spot, Andrew Gu and Robert Seby won both its matches and are undefeated since getting paired back together three matches ago. At No. 2 doubles, Vasileios Iliopoulos and Arthur Neuhaus also won their two weekend matches and have now won four in a row.
"I was really happy with how the players performed and incorporating what we have been working on the practice courts into the matches. And obviously to win against Fresno State, a team we lost to last year and move on from that win to taking care of Marquette was a good all around performance by the team."
The Broncos who played and lost to BYU earlier in the spring to open the conference season face four straight conference foes starting with Saint Mary's and Pacific.
"I couldn't have asked for a better preparation going into the heart of conference season. The players are feeling confident but its now about being humble enough to get back to work and understand that conference season starts again," said Angus.
The Gaels (2-10, 0-2) are 2-1 at home this season and will play its third conference match having lost to San Diego and BYU.
The Tigers (3-10, 0-1) have picked up two of its three wins at home where they are 2-3. It lost its lone conference match to BYU.
