SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Matias Sborowitz helped Pepperdine clinch the doubles point and then seal a 4-1 win over Santa Clara men's tennis with a victory in singles in Saturday's regular-season finale.
With the team leading 3-1, Sborowitz closed out Santa Clara's Vasileios Iliopoulos 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 on court No. 4 to win his seventh straight singles outing and clinch the match.
The Waves (11-12, 5-4 West Coast Conference) also had straight set wins in two other singles matches with Corrado Summaria knocking off Jesus Barajas 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at the No. 2 position and Tim Zeitvogel dispatching Robert Seby 7-5, 6-2 on court five.
"It was a difficult one," Santa Clara Niall Angus said of the loss. "Pepperdine is a good team and coming into its own at the end of the season and it's always difficult to play them."
Sborowitz teamed with Pawel Jankowiak at No. 3 doubles and downed the Broncos (15-7, 5-4) duo of Iliopoulos and Kamran Khan 6-4 to earn the doubles point.
On court No. 6, Santa Clara's Santiago Hinojosa evened the match at 1-all with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jankowiak.
"I thought we played a good doubles point," Angus said. "In singles, we fought hard but let some chances slip away in first sets."
The teams split two sets in each of the two uncompleted singles matches.
On court No. 3, Connor Garnett led Enrique Luque Rico of Pepperdine 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 and at the No. 1 position Adrian Oeztbach held a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 advantage over Andrew Gu of Santa Clara.
SENIOR DAY
Prior to the match, the team recognized seniors Connor Garnett, Andrew Gu, Kamran Khan and Robert Seby who were making their final appearance in Degheri Tennis Center.
"Really, the emotional and sad thing about today is saying goodbye to the seniors who have had such fantastic careers here," Angus said. "They've helped turned the program around over the last four years. But it's not over, we have the conference tournament coming up and hopefully the NCAAs after that."
