SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis swept a short-handed Portland squad, 4-0 in a West Coast Conference match on Friday afternoon to extend its win streak to seven matches.
Freshman Arthur Neuhaus recorded the match clincher with a straight set victory over Leo Hibi on court five, 6-3, 6-4 to help the Broncos (11-3, 2-1 WCC) remain undefeated at home at 7-0.
Portland (5-10, 0-3 WCC) was short one player and had to forfeit at the No. 3 spot in doubles and also at the No. 6 singles.
With the doubles forfeiture, Santa Clara needed to win only one of the two doubles matches as Andrew Gu and Robert Seby beat Eleftherios Neos and Sema Pankin, 6-4 on court one to put the Broncos up 1-0 in the team score.
After the singles forfeiture gave SCU a 2-0 lead, Connor Garnett put the Broncos up 3-0 with a straight set triumph over Nicklas Oberg, 6-2, 6-1 on court two.
Neuhaus' match clincher helped mark the first win over Portland during Bronco head coach Niall Angus' four year tenure with the program, including one as an assistant coach.
