SAN DIEGO - Santa Clara men's tennis lost to San Diego State, 4-1 on Saturday in a nonconference match that was closer than the score indicated.
Four of the six singles matches went to a third set including the match clincher by Rafael Gonzalez over Santiago Hinojosa, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (9-7) on court six.
The two matches that were ongoing at the time of the Aztecs clinch were in the third sets with Jan Kirchhoff and Connor Garnett deadlocked at, 6-4, 4-6, 5-5 on court two and Fabian Roendorf was ahead early, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 3-1 against Vasileios Iliopoulos on court three.
San Diego State (10-8) put themselves in a position to win taking the first three points to get ahead 3-0 on the team score.
Kirchhoff and Gonzalez teamed up to beat Iliopoulos and Arthur Neuhaus, 6-4 on court two to clinch the doubles point.
The Aztecs followed with singles wins on courts five and four when Arnaud Restifo took down Neuhaus, 6-0, 6-2 and Ignacio Martinez defeated Robert Seby , 6-4, 6-3.
Andrew Gu picked up the lone point for Santa Clara (12-5) with a three-set win over Sander Andersen, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, before the clincher by Gonzalez.
