TEMPE, Ariz. - Santa Clara's Miki Ueoka's produced a solid round in the first day of the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's West Regional at ASU's Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Ueoka shot an even par 72 and is currently tied for 17th out of 108 players heading into day two.
"I was very pleased with Miki's play today as she really did not throw any shots away," said head women's golf coach Polly Schulze. "Two bogies, two birdies and the rest were pars. Miki will undoubtedly want to improve on today's score and I have every confidence in her ability to do that."
Unlike many of her opponents, the Lihue, Hawaii native teed off at 7 a.m. and did not have to deal with the intense temperatures as it reached near 100 degrees midday. Ueoka will have to deal with the head and potential slight wind tomorrow as she tees off at 11:20 a.m. on Friday, May 8 in round two.
The current individual leader is Southern California's Belen Mozo, who is ranked No. 10 in the nation. She shot six-under par 66. Tied for second are the No. 1 women's player in the nation Jane Chin of UC Irvine and No. 6 Carlota Ciganda of Arizona State. Both shot five-under par 67.
Arizona State is in first place on the team leader board. The Sun Devils finished 15-under-par 273. Arizona, Texas and Texas A&M are tied for second place at even-par 288.
