SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The West Coast Conference announced its 2009 Spring All-Academic Team today. Santa Clara was represented by seven student-athletes from the six spring sports. For the year, 25 Broncos were named all-academic, which was good for second in the conference. Portland narrowly surpassed SCU with 26 honorees.
To be considered, a student-athlete must earn at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be a significant contributor to his or her team, have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the nominating institution, and participate in at least 50 percent of the institution's completed contests.
Women's golf led the way with four players honored. Juniors Jamie Nonaka and Erin Sullivan were joined by sophomores Miki Ueoka and Katie Sharpe. The quartet, while posting superior marks in the classroom, helped the Broncos to two team titles this season and the program's lowest round ever (294).
Nonaka had her best finish of the year - tied for 16th - at the Cal Poly Coast BMW College Challenge in October. She also posted her best round of the season (78) twice, most recently at the Aztec Invitational in February. As a marketing major, Nonaka has compiled a 3.62 grade-point average thus far. Sullivan posted her best finish of the year - tied for 15th - at the Sacramento State Invitational in March. The Broncos won that tournament. Sullivan has a 3.74 GPA as a business major.
Sharpe competed in seven tournaments for the Broncos and posted her best finish of the year - tied for 11th - at the Sac State Invitational. She tied for 17th at the WCC Championships, where she produced her lowest round of the year, 76. Sharpe has a 3.33 GPA. Ueoka also earned CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VIII At-Large Third Team accolades with a 3.49 cumulative GPA as a biochemistry major. She won three individual titles in 2009 and became the first-ever Santa Clara women's golfer to qualify for the NCAA Regionals.
Baseball sophomores Thain Simon and Curtis Wagner earned their first WCC All-Academic honors. Simon made 12 starts on the mound for the Broncos and posted a 3-5 record. He struck out 51 batters on the season, while compiling a 3.70 GPA as a finance major. Wagner earned a starting role at first base in 2009 and more than doubled his runs and doubles tally from his rookie season. He posted a team-leading .992 fielding percentage and was tied for first on the team in walks. He compiled a 3.77 GPA as a business major.
Women's tennis sophomore Ashley Pane rounded out the SCU selections. Pane compiled a 12-6 singles record this spring, with a seven game win streak from Feb. 19-Apr. 4, playing mostly in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. In doubles action, she went 11-15 with Stephanie Galainena. The Sacramento native has compiled a 3.26 GPA thus far as a political science major.
