Women's Golf Ties For First At Boise State

Oct. 14, 2008

BOISE, Idaho - Led by sophomore Miki Ueoka's first place finish with a score of 140, the Santa Clara women's golf team tied for first place at the Boise State Invitational.

"I knew that this team had these scores in them," said Bronco head coach Polly Schulze. "I'm glad that this kind of a finish happened early in the season because know they know that they have what it takes and that they can do it."

What was supposed to be a three-round event was changed to a two-round tournament due to a frost delay on Monday. Ueoka's shot 70 in both rounds, finishing altogether four-under-par.

"It feels good," said Ueoka about winning her first collegiate event. "I'm really excited. The season is young and I want to use this to help us move forward going into the next tournament."

Freshman Meaghan Kari registered her second top-10 finish of the year as she tied for 10th overall at six-over-par (72-78/150). Fellow freshman Tammy Surtees checked in at No. 23 with a total score of 155/+11 (74-81). Katie Sharpe tied for 32nd overall at 14-over-par (78-80/158) and Jamie Nonaka rounded out the Broncos' performers with a tied for 58th finish at 167/+23 (83-84).

The Broncos also made school history by recording the lowest team score in program history with their first round tally of 294. The previous record of 296 was set in 2003.

Santa Clara returns to action on Nov. 3-4 at the Cal Poly Women's Invitational. The two-day event will be held at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
