Women's Golf Participates in National Make A Difference Day

Oct. 28, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - On Sunday, Oct. 26, the Santa Clara women's golf team celebrated National Make A Difference Day by cooking and serving lunch for families at the San Jose Family Shelter. National Make A Difference Day is observed each year in late October. The event was organized by junior captain Erin Sullivan.

"Erin contacted the shelter about a month ago to see what our team could do for them and this was their greatest need from us," said head coach Polly Schulze. "As a coach I was very proud to see my team making a difference for the families. There were so many children that came and it made us feel good that we were giving them a wonderful meal."

Sullivan put together a menu that was approved by the shelter and then her and her teammate took off on a Costco run to purchase lunch fixings for 100 people. Beginning Saturday, the team began prepared pasta with marinara sauce and meatballs, bread, and salad with fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. On Sunday, once at the Shelter, the Broncos made their final touches to the meal. Barbara Utsurogi, mother of volunteer assistant coach Corey Utsurogi, was generous in baking homemade brownies, zucchini bread and snickerdoodles for 100 as well. The team very much appreciated her efforts to the cause.
