Softball Signs Six Dynamic & Versatile Players in 2023 Recruiting Class

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball announced on Thursday the signings of six players, including one from Hawaii and five across California, to National Letters of Intent for the 2023 recruiting class.

The class includes five versatile position players – Taryn Clements (Seal Beach, Calif.), Cairah Curran (Ewa Beach, Hawaii), Caitlyn Golob (Riverside, Calif.), Jaylee Marshall (Elk Grove, Calif.), Rebecca Rubio (Buena Park, Calif.) – and a pitcher, Avery Seva (Granite Bay, Calif.).

"This 2023 recruiting class is a very dynamic group.  We are excited about adding a quality mix of power, speed and versatility," said Broncos head coach Gina Carbonatto.  "We are graduating a large group of experienced Broncos and we believe the incoming class will continue to add to the depth of our roster as well as have some immediate impact on our growth and success in the West Coast Conference."

Taryn Clements | C/1B/RF | 5-11 | Seal Beach, Calif. | Los Alamitos High School

Clements, a four-year letterman at Los Alamitos High School, is ranked No. 67 in the class of 2023 Top 100 prospects by Extra Innings Softball.  The Griffins were ranked the No. 1 high school softball team nationally during her sophomore campaign.

"I chose SCU because the coaches and players created such a welcoming and fun environment," said Clements.  "Also, the educational opportunities are amazing and being on campus just felt right."

The right-handed hitting Clements batted .440 with an on-base percentage of .463 while throwing out 60-percent of attempted base stealers during the 2021-22 season.  This season, Clements is bettering those marks, hitting .500 and has a .750 OBP while throwing out 67-percent of the runners thus far.

Clements is a three-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete and plays her club ball for the CA Wildcats Weil 18U Premier team.

A four-time recipient of the PTA Award of Excellence All A's, Clements has a weighted GPA of 4.7.

Carbonatto on Clements: "Taryn comes to us from Los Alamitos High in Southern California.  Year in and year out, it's a top softball school that competes for the CIF championship. Taryn has a big time arm and will be dangerous when she's throwing people out from behind the plate or in right field."

Cairah Curran | MI/OF | 5-5 | Ewa Beach, Hawaii | James Campbell High School

Curran is a left-handed batting and right-handed throwing player who plays the middle infield positions as well as the outfield.  In 2022, Curran was named third team all-state selection in Hawaii as well as first-team Oahu Interscholastic Association West selection.

"I chose Santa Clara because I know I would get a great college experience and an amazing education, all while playing the sport I love," said Curran.

She plays for the OC Batbusters club team that was a 2022 Elite 8 team finisher 16U tier 2 in the Alliance Fastpitch Championship Series.  Curran was also named second team all-tournament 16U at the Triple Crown Nationals.

Curran has been named to the principal's list since 2019 for her work in the classroom.

Carbonatto on Curran: "Cairah is from Hawaii but she has played for a Southern California powerhouse travel team for the past several years.  She will bring speed, strength and a triple threat on offense to our team. We are thrilled to be bringing a top prospect from Hawaii to Santa Clara."

Caitlyn Golob | OF | 5-8 | Riverside, Calif. | Martin Luther King High School

A two-time captain for the Martin Luther King High softball team, Golob is a speedy left-handed hitting outfielder who primarily patrols center field.

"I chose Santa Clara because it feels like home and it is where I can truly see myself living for the next four years," said Golob.  "SCU is where I can have the best opportunity to grow both as a player and as a person."

Golob plays for the Athletics Mercado-Carroll club team and won the 2022 USA Preps Summer Nationals Championship.

She won the Scholar-Athlete Award in 2021 at King High and also was recognized with the PEAK (Promoting Educational Athletics at King) Individual Award.

Carbonatto on Golob: "Caitlyn is a fireball to watch play this beautiful game. With a strong arm and speed, she will add to our already fast outfield. We cannot wait to see her cause havoc on opposing teams' defenses with her dynamic offensive approach."

Jaylee Marshall | C/SS/OF | 5-7 | Elk Grove, Calif. | Sheldon High School

Marshall led Sheldon High to the 2022 San Joaquin section championship as well as the Delta League championships in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022.  In both of those seasons, Marshall was named as the Huskies' most valuable defensive player.

"I chose Santa Clara because I enjoyed the atmosphere of the campus and could see myself playing with the softball team as a Bronco," said Marshall.

The right-handed hitting and throwing utility player has a .331 batting average and .376 on-base percentage in 58 varsity games to go along with a .980 fielding percentage in 393 total chances.

Academically, Marshall has maintained a 4.0 GPA and was twice named student-athlete scholar at her high school and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Carbonatto on Marshall: "Jaylee is a natural leader behind the dish as well as an all-around athlete that can play infield and outfield. Not very often do we see catchers that stand out equally in every defensive position they play. Jaylee will be a special addition to this already versatile roster."

Rebecca Rubio | MI/OF | 5-2 | Buena Park, Calif. | John F. Kennedy High School

Rubio, a two-time captain and four-time letterman at John F. Kennedy High, helped lead the Fighting Irish to the Empire League Championship during the 2021-22 season.  She was named first team All-League last season and garnered second team recognition in 2020-21.

During the 2021-22 campaign, Rubio finished top three in the league in batting average (.476) and on-base percentage (.522) to go along with 16 stolen bases.

"I chose Santa Clara because of the atmosphere and chemistry the team has and once I stepped on campus and the field, I saw myself being a Bronco," said Rubio.

In addition to softball, Rubio also competes on the varsity soccer team and won the Best Flyer Award while on the varsity cheer squad in 2019-20.

Carbonatto on Rubio: "Rebecca brings a high level of passion and commitment to our program. She can do a little bit of everything offensively and defensively. She swings it from the left side and also plays both infield and outfield. We are excited to see where she pushes the envelope here in her career."

Avery Seva | RHP | 5-6 | Granite Bay, Calif. | Granite Bay High School

Seva was ranked No. 34 overall and the No. 17-ranked 2023 pitcher by Extra Innings Elite 100.  She was also named first team all-conference in the Sierra Foothill League last season where she posted a 10-3 record with a 1.92 ERA.  The right-hander struck out 150 hitters over 98 1/3 innings.

"I chose Santa Clara because the university provides an incredible amount of resources both academically and athletically that will help propel me towards my goals," said Seva.

She plays club ball for LTG Lions Henderson Premier and helped lead them to third place finishes in the PGF Nationals Power Pool and the Triple Crown World Series gold bracket in 2022.

Seva's been named to the school honor roll since 2019.

Carbonatto on Seva: "Avery comes to us as a top Northern California pitcher and has led her high school and club team in the circle the past few years. We are excited to add her experienced arm to our pitching staff."
