Softball with Doubleheader Wins on Day One of SVC II Tourney
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - On a misty and sometimes drizzly first day of the Silicon Valley Classic II Tournament that resulted in some schedule shuffling, Santa Clara softball defeated Utah State in both doubleheader games in the only games that were played on the day.

Game 1: Santa Clara 5 – Utah State 1

Sage Hager tossed five solid innings while the Santa Clara offense took advantage of three hit batsmen and seven walks issued by Utah State pitching in the Broncos 5-1 win.

Hager (6-3) retired the first 13 batters to open the game and gave up just two hits and a run to notch her fifth-straight win.  Regan Dias threw two scoreless innings to close out the game.

The first three runs scored by the Broncos (10-12) all reached base on a walk.  Ashley Trierweiler, Bailey McLaughlin and Hazyl Gray each got a free pass in the first, third and fourth innings before eventually coming home.

The first hit of the game did not come until Trierweiler's single in the fourth.

Utah State (7-9) got on the board in the top of the fifth on a single by Makenzie Macfarlane, foilowed by Hailey McLean's RBI double.  Those were the only two hits mustered by the Aggies.

Santa Clara added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth when Morgan Salmon tripled home Lauren LaHood and Bethany Shih.

While McLean (3-1) did not allow a hit in her 2 1/3 innings of work, she gave up two runs on five walks to take the loss.

Game 2: Santa Clara 9 - Utah State 3

Ashley Trierweiler hit a leadoff home run and Santa Clara never looked back, scoring in five of the six innings in the 9-3 victory over Utah State (7-10) to sweep the doubleheader.

In the bottom of the first, Trierweiler deposited the 3-2 offering by Tess Bumiller over the right center wall for her sixth home run of the season.  Lauren LaHood added a 2-RBI single in the frame to give SCU an early 3-0 lead.

Santa Clara (11-12) added a pair of runs in the second and third innings to give Broncos starter Hannah Edwards a 7-0 cushion heading to the fourth.

Edwards had a slight hiccup in the fourth, giving up three runs on four hits, in the only inning she gave up hits.  She exited after throwing 4 1/3 innings and picked up the win to move to 2-3 on the year.

Bumiller (2-4) was knocked out in the first after only getting one out and was saddled with the loss.

All but one hitter in the starting lineup had a hit for SCU who had 12 hits total.  Emma Bickford, Sammy Needham, Abigail Charpentier and Regan Dias each collected two hits.  Trierweiler and LaHood drove in two runs apiece.
