Sage Hager Nabs WCC Softball Pitcher of the Week Recognition

WCC Release

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball pitcher Sage Hager was named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week after she threw a no-hitter and earned a save in the doubleheader sweep of Nevada on Wednesday.

The sophomore hurler needed 97 pitches to toss the program's fifth no-hitter since 2000 where she walked one and hit three batters over seven innings in Santa Clara's 1-0 win in the second game of the twin bill.  Of the 21 outs recorded, 14 came on fly balls, five on grounders, one on a strikeout and one caught stealing.

The game was a scoreless deadlock until Allyson Ferreira's RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth provided the only run of the game.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Hager came in relief to earn a save in the Broncos 2-1 victory.  She entered the game with two outs in the top of the seventh and the potential game-tying run at third.  In seven pitches she got the Wolfpack batter to foul out to first to close out the game.

This was the first WCC weekly recognition for Hager and the fourth overall for Santa Clara this season.  Lauren LaHood, Emma Bickford and Ashley Trierweiler were previously named Players of the Week.

The Broncos next play this weekend against Saint Mary's on the road.
