Trierweiler & Gray Named NFCA All-Region in Softball

NFCA Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Santa Clara softball players Ashley Trierweiler and Hazyl Gray were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region teams on Thursday becoming just the second and third Broncos to be honored.

Trierweiler was nabbed first team All-Pacific Region outfielder while Gray garnered second team recognition as an utility player/pitcher.

Established in 1983, the NFCA is the professional growth organization for fastpitch softball coaches from all competitive levels of play comprised of over 6,700 members from all 50 states and several international countries.  The awards honor softball student-athletes from NFCA's 10 regions with first, second and third-team selections.  NFCA member head coaches from each respective region nominated student-athletes and voted for the teams.

Earlier in the week, Trierweiler was named first team All-West Coast Conference for the third time in her illustrious career as well as Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators.

This spring, the Bronco senior led the WCC in batting average (.486), runs (50), hits (71), doubles (14), walks (34) and on-base percentage (.584) in all games to help lift the Broncos to their first back-to-back 20 win seasons since 2005 and 2006.  Trierweiler started in all 49 games at centerfield and had a couple of impressive streaks, a 21-game hit streak as well as a 37-game on-base streak.

A two-way player, Gray had a 5-8 record in 25 appearances including tying for the team-lead with three complete games.  The freshman southpaw led the pitching staff with a .240 opponent's batting average and strikeouts with 45.  In WCC action, she led the team in wins (two), ERA (3.29) and opponent's batting average (.173).  She also tossed a two-hit shutout at San Diego.  In the batter's box, Gray hit for a .236 average with six extra-base hits and did not commit an error in 30 chances in the outfield.

Jaime Forman-Lau was the first Bronco to be named NFCA All-Region in 2003 and 2004.
