SAN MATEO, Calif. – A trio of Santa Clara softball players - Emma Bickford, Hannah Edwards and Ashley Trierweiler - were named 2023 preseason All-West Coast Conference by a vote of the league's six head coaches, the WCC office announced on Tuesday. The Broncos were selected to finish fourth by a vote of the same panel.
Trierweiler and Edwards were named All-WCC first and second team, respectively, in 2022, while Bickford is a two-time honorable mention.
Trierweiler, a first-team all-conference selection in 2021 and 2022, started in all 51 games at centerfield last season and had a slashline of .394/.440/.471. The redshirt junior also had a 21-game hit streak last spring and finished first in the conference with 67 hits and third in batting average.
Edwards had an 8-8 record and two saves inside the circle with a 2.68 ERA over 24 appearances last season. The redshirt sophomore was fifth in the WCC with 1.64 walks issued per seven innings.
Bickford earned conference honorable mention recognition in 2019 and 2021. Last spring, the graduate student who is in her fifth season with the Broncos started in all 51 games and batted .287. She led the team with 12 doubles and four sacrifice flies.
In total, 15 players were named to the WCC preseason team including 12 position players and three pitchers.
BYU and LMU were picked to finish atop the preseason poll as each school garnered three first place votes. San Diego was picked third, just one point ahead of the Broncos.
The Broncos opens the 2023 season on Friday against Rutgers in a neutral site game in Sacramento at the 2023 NorCal Kickoff.
