Softball Picks Up First Win of the Season in a Friday Split

EL PASO, Texas –  Santa Clara softball came up with a split at the Dr. Diana Natalicio Memorial Tournament on Friday, shutting out Buffalo 6-0 before falling to Texas Tech 9-1 in five innings.

GAME 1: Santa Clara 6 - Buffalo 0

Santa Clara (1-4) bats came alive with six runs on 12 hits while Hazyl Gray and Regan Dias combined for a two-hit shutout in the 6-0 win over Buffalo (1-6) in Friday's first game.

Five Broncos tallied two hits each including Lauren LaHood and Marie Martorella who collected two RBIs apiece.

Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Santa Clara strung together four consecutive singles and five overall, to put up four runs.  LaHood had the big hit that plated two Broncos against the Bulls starter Julia Tarantino.

Ashley Trierweiler pushed the lead out to 6-0 with a solo home to right in the fourth.

Meanwhile, Gray had a no-hitter going through 4 2/3 innings before Kate Vara's base hit.  Brianna Castro followed with another single but Gray got Nagel to lineout to close out the frame.  The two singles allowed were the only base hits the Bronco pitching gave up in the game.

Regan Dias came in relief in the sixth the tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings and combined with Gray, struck out 10 Bulls hitters.

Gray (1-1) earned her first Bronco win while Tarantino fell to 0-3 on the season.

GAME 2: Texas Tech 9 - Santa Clara 1 (five innings)

Texas Tech (5-2) had a pair of home runs in the six-run second inning and Sage Hoover threw a five-inning complete game to help the Red Raider past Santa Clara, 9-1.

In the second, Peyton Blythe and Arriana Villa each had two-run homers off Bronco starter Hannah Edwards.  The latter knocked Edwards out of the game after 1 2/3 innings of work.  Edwards gave up six runs on six hits before being lifted for Regan Dias.

Arriana Villa, Kailey Wyckoff and Alanna Barraza had two hits with Barrazza driving in a game-high three runs.

Hooever allowed only two Bronco hits while fanning eight to improve to 3-0 on the year.  Edwards dropped her season record to 0-2.

Abigail Charpentier drove in the lone run for Santa Clara (1-5).
