Behind sophomore libero Katy Schatzman, who averaged almost 21 digs per match this weekend and was named the MVP of the Tournament, Santa Clara swept the SIU Edwardsville Tournament this weekend, collecting a final-match 3-0 win vs. Western Illinois on Sunday.  Schatzman collected a match-high 23 digs twice in three matches and averaged 3.3 assists per game as well. Megan Anders and Katherine Douglas were both named to the SIUE All-Tournament team.

Santa Clara travels to St. Louis University for a 5:30 pm match on Monday night before returning to the Mission Campus.  The Broncos were headed to the Schatzman's extended family Sunday night for a St. Louis-style BBQ and will visit the famed Arch on Monday morning.

Santa Clara defeated Western Illinois 26-24, 25-22 and 25-19. Santa Clara hit .369 with 49 kills (8e, 111 att.).  It collected 48 assists, five aces (seven errors), 50 digs and eight team blocks.  WIU hit .218 with 47 kills (20e, 124 att.).  It collected 44 assists, three aces (two errors), 49 digs and two team blocks.

"It was a really nice honor for Katy to be named MVP, especially because so much of her family is getting to see her play for the first time in college," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace.  "She had great energy on the court today. The team has impressed me during this tournament with their resolve. They don't want to lose and they fight hard together. It's refreshing.  I feel good about our mental resolve.  They want to be on the same page and they can't wait to get better.  They never panic and always believe we can win."

Santa Clara was led by its duo of middle blockers, Megan Anders (seven kills, hitting .429 with five blocks assists) and Haley Cameron (9 kills, hitting .400).  "One of our goals after this weekend is to work to set Haley and Megan more often. They have really good chemistry with each other," added Wallace.  "They motivate each other by being competitive in a positive spirit. They really help each other out."

Douglas collected 12 kills (2e, 35 att.), hitting .286.  Taylor Milton scored 13 kills with zero errors in 25 attempts, hitting a sparkling .520.  Schatzman had 16 digs and six assists with
Lacey Maas hitting .375 with three kills and five block assists.

The Broncos ran a 6-2 for the first time this season on Sunday and found success. Alyssa Anderson collected 26 assists and 10 digs.  Chelsea Heier had 16 assists and four digs.  "We are a work in progress right now offensively, but I was impressed today with both," said Wallace.  "Chelsea is becoming more familiar with Santa Clara. Alyssa served really well in the second game, scoring a lot of points in a row, and it really helped us."
