SANTA CLARA, Calif. - When Santa Clara University junior Megan Anders isn't leading the Broncos on the volleyball court, she's been putting her efforts into helping the Bronco Athletic Department become more environmentally aware. On the court and off, Anders is leaving quite a mark around the Leavey Center and the Mission campus. 

As a student-athlete Anders fits the Bronco mold perfectly; she excels in the classroom and as a teammate. As a student, the native of Folsom, Calif. has big goals. Upon graduation, she aspires to work in medicine.

"I want to work with biomedical devices; working to design and develop them," Anders explained.

While balancing a grueling academic and athletic career, Anders finds time to get involved in her third passion, promoting sustainability. Since the beginning of her sophomore year, Anders has served as the Sustainability Office Athletic and Recreation Intern here at SCU. 

"Sustainability has always been something I have been passionate about," said Anders. "With the sustainability office, I help highlight what SCU athletics is currently doing well and promote new ideas to make the department more sustainable."

Anders helped plan SCU volleyball's "Green Game," which highlighted sustainability on campus, and urged students and fans to be environmentally conscious. Anders has also worked with Santa Clara Media Relations and Marketing to film quick advertisements featuring Santa Clara student-athletes that ask fans to recycle when attending Bronco sporting events.

"When we recruited Megan, we expected her to have a full plate academically, athletically and socially," said Bronco volleyball head coach Jon Wallace. "Megan has done a great job of venturing into her interests. The sustainability campaign she's running with athletics is amazing to see. She's spoken to our entire staff about changing how we view recycling. To me, she's following in the lines of someone like [former Rhodes Scholar semifinalist and Bronvo volleyball player] Tanya Schmidt. Megan is a person who wants to excel on the volleyball court and in everything she does."

Anders has accomplished a lot on the Mission campus. She gives all he credit to the people around her both on and off the court. 

"My Bronco teammates are always supportive of me," said Anders. "They're always willing to help me and my sustainability projects. Coach Wallace has been so supportive of me and all my passions. Also, I'm so thankful for all the administrators in the athletic department that have supported me and given me the opportunity to work as the sustainability intern."
