Volleyball Drops Final Regular Season Match at Saint Mary's

Finishing off the regular season, Santa Clara dropped a 3-0 match at Saint Mary's on Saturday.  Set scores were 14-25, 18-25 and 13-25.  Santa Clara finishes the regular season at 20-11 and 9-8 in the WCC.  Saint Mary's is 17-10 and 12-4 in the WCC.  Santa Clara will now wait until next Sunday (Nov. 25) to see if it receives an at-large NCAA tournament berth.

Santa Clara was led by Kayla Lommori, who hit .412 with nine kills (2 e, 17 att.).  Haley Cameron and Katherine Douglas both had five kills, with Douglas adding a team-high eight digs.  Alyssa Anderson had 15 assists and four digs.  Chelsea Heier had 11 assists and six digs.  Katy Schatzman collected seven digs.

Saint Mary's was led by Lauren Corp, who collected 10 kills, hitting .400.  Gabby Jolly, Kristina Graven and Samantha Tinsley all scored seven kills each.  Missy White had 19 assists and Anna Schroeder scored a match-high 13 digs.

Santa Clara hit .134 with 31 kills (18 e, 97 att.).  The Broncos collected 29 assists, 35 digs, two service aces, five service errors and four team blocks.  Saint Mary's hit .379 with 43 kills (seven e, 95 att.).  The Gaels collected 41 assists, 42 digs, eight service aces, two service errors and 10 team blocks.

In the first set Saint Mary's went up 6-3 on a kill by Tinsley.  Saint Mary's then went on a 14-2 run to take a 20-5 lead.  Santa Clara scored five straight kills to pull within 10 at 20-10 SMC.  Saint Mary's won the first set on a Bronco service error and a Saint Mary's team block.  The Broncos lost the first set 24-14.  SCU hit .000 with eight kills (8 e, 28 att.).  SMC hit .250 with 12 kills (5 e, 28 att.). 

Santa Clara pulled within a couple on a ball handling error by the Gaels at 6-4 and another one at 7-5 SMC.  A dump for a kill by Anderson resulted in another point, but a hitting error gave the Gaels the ball.  Anders kill gave the Broncos the ball, down 8-7.  The Gaels scored three times before the Broncos called for time, down 11-7.  Saint Mary's scored once out of the timeout on a kill before Lommori flew in for the cross court kill and then scored another on one off the block, 12-9 SMC.  After a sideout, Lommori scored a kill off the block again, but SMC answered, 14-10 SMC.  Lommori scored her third straight sideout off the block with a kill.  After SMC answered, Milton collected a kill for the sideout, again off the block.  The Broncos laced together a couple of points before Saint Mary's scored on a kill.  Anders kill off the block gave the Broncos a sideout and Milton scored an ace on the next play, 20-16 SMC.  Saint Mary's scored a couple before Douglas crushed it down the line.  SMC won the second set on an overpass, 25-18.  SCU hit .105 with 12 kills (8 e, 38 att.).  SMC hit .324 with 14 kills (2 e, 37 att.).    

Saint Mary's went on a 3-1 run to start the third set, including an ace.  After the Broncos scored on a couple Douglas kills, the Broncos trailed 6-3.  A couple aces by Kristina Graven put the Gaels up by four before Cameron scored a kill.  A couple of kills by Jordan Shaw and another by Corp made it 11-4 SMC. Timeout Broncos.  The Gaels scored a couple more before Lacey Maas collected a kill off the block.  Saint Mary's scored two more before Milton's cross court kill gave SCU a sideout, down 16-6.  Milton scored another cross court kill for a sideout.  Lommori's service ace was followed by a service error, 20-9 Gaels.  The Gaels scored twice, sandwiched between a Maas kill.  Milton's kill stopped the rally, but the Gaels answered again.  SMC was called in the net to give SCU the sideout.  After the Broncos served it out, Lommori scored off the block to hold off match point.  A kill by Jolly ended the match, with SMC winning set three 25-13.  Santa Clara hit .290 with 11 kills (2 e, 31 att.).  Saint Mary's hit .379 with 17 kills (0 e, 30 att.).
