Santa Clara will hosts Bronco Alumni Day on Saturday with a BBQ at 11 am for former alums at Alumni Park (to the left of the Leavey Center).  There will be a post-game meet and great with current team.   Bring your former teammates with you and contact Bronco assistant Matt Lyles for more information (mlyles@scu.edu).

Note: Women's Volleyball Breast Cancer Awareness Match this Saturday

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Santa Clara Women's Volleyball Team will host a PINK theme match this Saturday against BYU. It is meant to spread Breast Cancer Awareness and inspire fans to become more involved in the fight against the disease. In addition to pink decor, there will be pink foam fingers handed out to the first 50 fans. Please join us for this event and assist us in spreading the word.

Santa Clara will host second-year West Coast Conference member and No. 16 BYU on Saturday at 1 pm.  The Cougars play at Saint Mary's on Thursday night and the Broncos come into the match after a 3-0 beating of Sac State on Tuesday night. Immediately following the match, the men's basketball team will host its annual Red & White Scrimmage.

The volleyball match is also Santa Clara's Breast Cancer Awareness match so wear your pink!  "This is always a cause that we are very involved in," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace.

Wallace liked playing the match vs. Sac State Tuesday after being on the road for four consecutive West Coast Conference matches.  "It was just good to get back in our own gym and get familiar especially with the big match vs. BYU on Saturday," said Wallace.  "For us, a lot of our comfort level comes from our serving and passing. We had eight aces and just one reception error and that helps with our confidence in our gym."

"We have a big challenge in BYU," said Wallace.  "They have two of the top players in the league in Jennifer Hamson and Alexa Gray."  

Hamson leads the team with 3.92 kpg and Gray is hitting .316 with 3.39 kpg.  

BYU is 18-1 on the season and tied with No. 1 Penn State for the best record in NCAA Division I volleyball. They are 6-1 in the WCC prior to hosting Saint Mary's on Thursday night.  Their lone loss was at Saint Mary's earlier in the year.

Nicole Warner is No. 6 in the country in blocks per set (1.62) and setter Heather Hannemann is No. 15 in the country with 11.48 apg. Prior to the match with SMC, the Cougars rank No. 1 for hitting percentage (.319) and No. 13 in blocks per set (2.92).

"Our girls are excited to play the Cougars," said Wallace. "We have nine matches left and we are going to give it everything we have.  Our team needs to really step up and play in the next few weeks and take each match one at a time. We have five weeks left and every day is important in the gym in practice."

The Broncos continue to be led by Megan Anders, who is hitting .391 with 2.80 kpg.  Taylor Milton leads the team with 2.90 kpg, Alyssa Anderson leads the team with 6.39 apg and is tied for the team lead in aces with fellow setter Chesea Heier, with both scoring .33 sapg.  Katy Schatzman leads the team with 3.63 dpg and Katherine Douglas is second with 2.50 dpg and second in aces with 0.31.

Being bitten by the injury bug early on in the season, Lacey Maas played in the third set vs. Sac State in her first action since late August and was a perfect four of four in attempts.  "It was good to see her back in the line-up Tuesday night," said Wallace.  "She did a good job with all of her opportunities which was a good boost for her confidence."
