SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis signed James Bell, a transfer from Louisville, for the upcoming spring quarter.  Broncos head coach Niall Angus made the announcement.

Bell, who is from nearby Fremont, California will redshirt this spring season and compete for the Broncos starting in the fall.  While Bell competed during his freshman season for the Cardinals, posting a 7-8 overall singles and 6-5 doubles record, he will have four years of eligibility remaining with the COVID exception for last season.

"I chose to attend SCU because of the amazing culture that coach Niall has created within the program, and also because of the strong academics that Santa Clara possesses," said Bell.  "I essentially grew up playing on the Santa Clara courts so I have always been around the program to an extent and have seen what coach Niall has been able to do since he took over the program.  So when it came to where I wanted to play next, SCU being so close to home combined with the amazing coaching staff and academics was a straightforward decision for me."

Coming out of The King's Academy in Sunnyvale, California, Bell was rated as a four-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net and reached a high of No. 87 ranking nationally in the class of 2019.

The six-foot, right-handed player was ranked in the top-10 in the Northern California Boys 16s and 18s singles rankings.  He also won the Boys 18s Northern California sectional title and clinched the deciding match for Northern California in the Zone Team 16U championship.

"I am thrilled that James will be joining our team this spring," said Angus.  "He is passionate about the game, has a hunger to learn, possesses fantastic technical ability and will be a great asset to us on both the singles and the doubles court.  I look forward to experiencing what he is capable of as we help him work towards reaching his potential."
