Barretto of Men’s Tennis Tabbed ITA UTR National Player of the Week

TEMPE, Ariz.Dominic Barretto became the first Santa Clara tennis player, men or women, to win the coveted Intercollegiate Tennis Association Universal Tennis Rating Division I National Player of the Week, the ITA announced on Wednesday.

The ITA UTR Player of the Week honors a collegiate tennis player whose increase in UTR rating throughout the previous week was indicative of his/her high level of performance, including notable wins such as clinching matches and upsets.  

The graduate student from Tiburon, California was recognized after winning a pair of singles matches atop the Bronco lineup and a doubles win to increase his UTR from 12.51 nine days ago to 12.61

Barretto defeated Johannes Seeman of San Diego State 6-2, 7-6, (7-4) on April 19, playing at No. 1 for the first time since the end of February.  It was his first Bronco win at the top spot for the graduate transfer from Cal, helping the Broncos win 4-2 over the Aztecs. 

Last Saturday against San Francisco, Barretto won both the doubles and singles matches to lift the Broncos to a 5-2 victory in the season finale. 

In doubles, Barretto teamed up with Guillaum Dalmasso to help secure the doubles point.  Playing on court two, the Broncos duo took care of Nitzan Ricklis and Johan Garpered 6-3. 

In singles action, Barretto remained at No. 1 to defeat Ricklis 6-4, 6-3.  The win marked his eighth in the last 10 singles matches to conclude his collegiate career. 

Barretto helped Santa Clara close out the spring season on a high note, winning five of their last six matches to finish with a winning record at 8-7.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is the governing body of college tennis, overseeing men's and women's varsity tennis at all levels – NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College.

The Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) is a global rating system that promotes fair and competitive play across the tennis world. All players, regardless of age, gender, geography or skill level, are rated on the same scale between 1 and 16.50 based on actual match results.
