SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis returned to the courts for the first time since March 11 to defeat UC Davis 4-3 in the 2021 spring season opener on Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore Mann Shah clinched the match on court two defeating David Goulak in three sets, 7-6 (7-0), 2-6, 6-2.
Shah's clincher came with the Broncos (1-0) ahead 3-2 after singles wins by freshman Guillaume Dalmasso, junior Arthur Neuhaus and sophomore Nick Cmager at the bottom of the lineup in the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots.
After dropping the doubles point, Santa Clara evened the match on Dalmasso's debut win over Arjith Jayaraman 6-1, 6-3. Neuhaus followed with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph of Brett Brinkman to put the Broncos up 2-1 in the team score.
Tied at 2-all, Cmager took down Mitchell Davis 6-3, 6-3 to give the Broncos a leg up before Shah's clincher.
With the match already decided at 4-2, Andrei Volgin beat Vasileios Ilopoulos in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 for the final team score of 4-3 in favor of the Broncos. The Aggies dropped to 0-3 on the season.
