SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's golf team will spend the weekend with 15 other schools competing in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, to be played Saturday and Sunday at the 6,113-yard, par-72 Classic Club Resort in Palm Desert, Calif.
The Broncos are back in tournament action after a second place finish at the rain-shortened Hobble Creek Fall Classic on Sept. 8. They will look for their fourth straight top-5 finish in events dating back to last season in a field that includes tournament host Wyoming, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, College of Charleston, Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Montana State, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Sacramento State, San Jose State, Southern Utah, UC Riverside and William and Mary.
Teams and individuals will play 36 holes on Saturday with a shotgun start slated for 7:30 a.m. PT and Sunday's final 18 holes will also begin at 7:30 a.m. The Classic Club is the former home of the Bob Hope Classic.
The Broncos opened their season with rounds of 296 and 294 at the Hobble Creek Classic to fall 13 shots behind New Mexico State with their 590 (+22) total and five of their six players finished in the top-12 among the 73 competing players. As a team Santa Clara can also match a program record with their third straight sub-300 round on Saturday.
Sophomore Annie Freman, who earned her 10th career top-10 finish with a sixth-place standing at the Hobble Creek Classic, will be joined by juniors Meghan Shain and Monique Riley, and freshmen Isabella Salant and Kyleigh Moreno to form the Broncos lineup for the upcoming tournament. Moreno, who prepped at Archbishop Mitty in San Jose, will be playing her first collegiate tournament.
At last season's event the Broncos claimed a ninth-place finish in the 20-team field with Freman the team's top individual finisher tying for 11th with a 10-over 226. Shain carded a 13-over 229 to place in a tie for 21st.
