McCartan, Noda Named To WCC Women’s Golf All-Academic Team; Shain Earns Honorable Mention

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior Kaci McCartan is the second Santa Clara women's golfer to be named to the West Coast Conference Women's Golf All-Academic Team three times and junior Ashley Noda earned her first selection while Meghan Shain was named honorable mention, the league office announced today.

"I'm very proud of all their accomplishments in the classroom this season," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "It's difficult to balance academics and golf with our sport being year round."

A four-year player from Plano, Tex. (Ursuline Academy), McCartan has competed in six events this season and is among the program's career leaders in rounds played. She earned her third-straight all-academic team selection compiling a 3.81 GPA majoring in mechanical engineering.

McCartan was named to the preseason 2015 All-WCC Team after enjoying a wonderful 2013-14 season competing in all 11 events with the second-best scoring average on the team at 76.71, her first individual title and six top-20 finishes. She posted a two-shot win at the Boise State Fall Invitational with a personal-best score of 69 (-3) in the second round and a 54-hole low score of 215 (-1) to lead her team to its first of three tournament titles.

Noda, from Roseville, Calif. (St. Francis HS), earned her first selection to the all-academic team with a 3.32 GPA in business. Competing in every event this spring she claimed a career-best eighth-place finish at the Matador Invitational in February. Noda was an honorable mention all-conference selection following her freshman year.

Shain, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif. (Frontier HS), earned conference recognition for the first time being named honorable mention all-academic.

"I think they are setting a great example for the rest of our team," Kelly said about her scholarly athletes.

At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to her team.
