SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf will send two teams to compete among the five squads at the Fresno State Classic starting Monday at the 6,217-yard, par-72 San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno.
Teams and individuals will play 54 holes over two days with a shotgun start format for Monday's first two rounds. All players will be re-grouped before Tuesday's final round, based on scores, and tee off every nine minutes from the first tee box. For the purposes of tournament honors and awards, ties will be split per NCAA Championship tie-breaking procedures.
Tournament host Fresno State, Cal State Northridge and Sacramento State will also field teams while the Broncos will have nine of their 10 rostered players compete on their two teams. Junior Ashley Noda is recovering from an illness and did not travel.
"I'm really looking forward to watching the girl's play this week," said head coach Krystal Kelly. "They worked really hard all week at practice focusing mainly on the short game."
The Broncos' first team will consist of Annie Freman, Meghan Shain, Monique Riley, Kristin Le and Kyleigh Moreno. The "White" team will have Kaci McCartan, Casey Briggs, Isabella Salant and Taylor Gentzkow. McCartan, Briggs and Gentzkow will be playing in their first events of the season.
Santa Clara is coming off a ninth place finish at the 16-team Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sept. 28 after rounds of 311, 320 and 310. Riley was the Broncos' top individual finisher at that event tying for 20th and, dating back to last season's WCC Championship, has topped all Santa Clara players twice in the last three events.
"As long as we play our own game and keep it simple we should score well," Kelly said of her team's chances at the Fresno State Classic.
