Women’s Golf Claims Second Place At Fresno State Classic

FRESNO, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's golf team couldn't overcome tournament host Fresno State in today's final round and settled for a second place finish at the Fresno State Classic, completed today at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno.

The Broncos carded a final round 308 and 904 total to finish 21 shots behind the host Bulldogs (883), who had a tournament-best score of 290 today. Santa Clara's 'B' team placed fifth with a 946 total, behind Sacramento State (932) and Cal State Northridge (918).

"We played well on the front nine but unfortunately we didn't play as well on the back," said head coach Krystal Kelly. "It was fun playing with Fresno and CSUN. Fresno played really well."

Sophomore Annie Freman and freshman Kristin Le were the top individual finishers for the Broncos, tying for sixth place at 9-over 225. Freman's 1-over 73 today moved her from 12th place into her 11th career top-10 finish in 14 events.

"Annie played really well today," Kelly stated.

Fresno State took the top four spots on the individual leaderboard with Madchen Ly the medalist. She finished with a 1-over 217, one shot better than Hannah Sodersten.

Entering today's final round in second place one shot off the lead, Meghan Shain carded a 79 to fall into a tie for ninth at +10 226.

Next up for the Broncos is their own Colby Classic, to be played October 20 and 21 at the Silver Creek Country Club. "It will be good to get another week of practice in before the Colby," Kelly noted.
