Women’s Golf Ends First Day In Ninth At Cowgirl Classic

MARICOPA, Ariz. – The Santa Clara women's golf team stumbled to a second-round 316 and dropped to ninth place after the first two rounds of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, competed at the 6,186-yard, par-72 Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.

The Broncos shot 295 in the morning round ending the first 18 holes one shot off the lead. But a disastrous second-round dropped them seven places on the leaderboard to ninth at 611 (+35). Still within striking distance of first-place Nevada, the Broncos need to make up 17 strokes Tuesday to catch the Wolfpack, who scored 594 over the opening 36 holes.

Defending Cowgirl Classic champion Annie Freman had rounds of 72 and 74 to tie for fifth-place at 2-over 146, two shots behind leader Emelie Lundstrom of USF. Freman shot a career-low 69 in last year's final round to make up a five-shot deficit and won medalist honors in a scorecard playoff.

Competing as an individual senior Kaci McCartan shot 3-over 147 (73-74) to tie for eighth-place with four golfers, including teammate freshman Kristin Le, who carded rounds of 72 and 75.

Junior Meghan Shain tied for 49th at 155 (74-81) while Monique Riley and Ashley Noda both had a difficult second round scoring 86. Riley totaled 163 for the day with Noda scoring 165.

Final round action tees off with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. (PT) Tuesday. Live scoring for the tournament is available at www.golfstatresults.com or click the link provided on the Bronco's website.
