SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's golf team will host the annual Colby Invitational beginning Monday at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose. For the first time in its 16-year history the event will play 54 holes with 36 being contested on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday on the 6,227 yard, par 72 course.
Host Santa Clara will have two teams competing in the eight-team field along with Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Eastern Washington, IUPUI, Northern Colorado and UC Riverside. UC Santa Cruz will have four players competing as individuals along with two players from Cal Poly and one from UC Riverside.
The field also has four past Colby Invitational champions with six titles among them. Santa Clara has won the event twice in the last three years, including an epic comeback to claim last year's title. The Broncos overcame a nine-shot deficit to beat Boise State by one shot. Santa Clara's Annie Freman was the individual medalist last year beating teammate Sadie Strain on the second hole of a playoff.
Santa Clara also won the event in 2012 while Cal State Northridge posted consecutive wins during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. Eastern Washington won the title in 2002-03 and UC Riverside was tabbed the champion in the rain-shortened 2004-05 event.
Along with defending individual medalist Freman, the Broncos' lineup will consist of Meghan Shain, Kaci McCartan, Monique Riley and Kristin Le. In a late change to the tournament field Santa Clara will also field a 'B' team that will include Casey Briggs, Isabella Salant, Kyleigh Moreno and Taylor Gentzkow.
UC Santa Cruz was originally scheduled to have a team compete but their four players will now play as individuals.
The tournament is named in honor of Marygrace Colby, who was hired by Santa Clara University in 1963 "to direct and instruct young women in recreational and athletic pursuits." For years Marygrace selflessly and single-handedly coached ALL women's sports at Santa Clara.
