SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Kicking off a big weekend, Santa Clara women's soccer beat CSUN by a final of 3-1. The win puts the Broncos at 5-3-0 on the season while the Matadors are 6-3-0.

Santa Clara returns to the field Sun., Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. vs. No. 6 Stanford.

"I'm happy with the result for sure," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "It's disappointing to give up the late goal but we were loose in our marking off the corner and it cost us. Northridge is a good team that has won a lot of games and they gave us a tough match today. It was very much a team effort for us today. Some players even made their debuts today. The players worked hard and we scored some quality goals with a chance to score more. I'm proud of our effort today."

Julie Vass, Dani Weatherholt, and Jenna Roering each scored for the Broncos while Megan Crosson had an assist. Andi Tostanoski picked up five saves in net and Melissa Lowder added one.

The Broncos struck in the eighth minute off the foot of Roering. She ran down a loose ball and tried to slip it past the keeper but she was able to make the stop. Roering recovered the rebound and hit a low shot to the far post that found the back of the net to make it 1-0.

Vass made the score 2-0 in the 22nd minute. After a corner kick Crosson played a ball back to Vass outside the 18-yard box near the upper left corner. She hooked a shot over the keeper and into the upper right corner of the net.

Santa Clara controlled the ball for the majority of the first half. Vass led the team with two shots and a goal. Roering also scored a goal. Tostanoski collected three saves.

In the 76th minute Grace Cutler was taken down in the box for a penalty kick. Weatherholt took the try and converted to make it the score 3-0.

The Matadors added a goal on a header off a corner kick in the 87th minute to make it 3-1. Tabatha Dickson scored the goal off a pass from Briana Geffre.
