Women's Soccer to Play on Television Thursday at Cal, Sunday at Portland

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Coming off an unbelievable weekend, No. 19 Santa Clara women's soccer will take a break from conference play on Thursday when they travel to No. 23 Cal to play at 2 p.m. on the Pac 12 Network. The Broncos then head to the Pacific Northwest for a 1 p.m. game at Portland on Sunday that will be broadcast live on ESPNU. Last week Santa Clara came away with two thrilling victories in double overtime. On Friday they beat LMU 2-1 and on Sunday topped Pepperdine 1-0.

Santa Clara had previously won back-to-back overtime games Oct. 10 and Oct. 23, 2009 and this was the first time in program history they won back-to-back double overtime contests. Mariana Galvan scored both game-winning goals and she was named WCC Player of the Week for her clutch performances. The last Bronco with two overtime winners in the same season was Jordan Angeli in 2009 when she scored game-winners vs. Georgetown on Sept. 6 and vs. Saint Mary's on Oct. 18. Galvan also becomes the first Santa Clara player with three overtime winners in the same season.

Grace Cutler leads Santa Clara (9-4-0, 2-1-0 WCC) with four goals and is tied for the team lead with eight points. Dani Weatherholt has scored three goals and added two assists to tie Cutler with eight points. Julie Vass has found the back of the net three times and has one assist. Mariana Galvan has scored three goals, all game-winners in double overtime. Megan Crosson leads the Broncos with five assists. Eight different Broncos have scored at least one goal and eight have at least one assist.

Andi Tostanoski has allowed seven goals for a 0.55 GAA. She has made 58 saves and has a .892 save percentage to go with six shutouts.

"We wish we had a little more time to prep for Thursday," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "It was always going to be a short week but it became a much shorter week when we played two overtime games. Normally our focus would be on getting on the field and tactics. We've had to change our emphasis this week to get the bodies to recover because a lot of players logged a lot of minutes. We'll try to do the tactical stuff in the film room."

Santa Clara is 16-20-7 all-time vs. Cal with the first meeting coming in 1980. Last season Cal topped the Broncos twice. The first was a 2-1 OT game in Santa Clara and the second was a 1-0 game in Berkeley.

Cal (9-3-2) is 5-0-0 at home this year and are on a three-game winning streak. Last week they took down Oregon 3-2 and Oregon State 1-0 at home.

"Thursday will be an interesting game because both Cal and Santa Clara are enjoying great seasons and it's a great rivalry," said Smith. "It's a non-conference game and we both have important conference games later in the week so it will be interesting to see how the two teams handle that. We both want to play well and win but at the same time we don't want to lose any players for the weekend."

Arielle Ship leads the team with 10 goals 24 points while adding four assists. Celeste Boureille has scored four goals and added two assists for 10 points. Ifeoma Onumonu is tops on the roster with five assists and has added a goal. IN all, eight Bears have at least one goal and 10 have at least one assist.

Emily Boyd has allowed nine goals for 0.62 GAA. She has made 40 saves for a .816 save percentage and has collected seven shutouts.

Santa Clara is 16-15-3 all-time vs. Portland with the first meeting coming in 1984. Last year Santa Clara beat Portland 1-0 at home.

Portland (6-8-0, 2-2-0 WCC) is 2-4 at home this year and has won its last two games. Last week the Pilots went on the road and picked up a 1-0 win and Saint Mary's and a 4-0 win at Pacific.

"Our games with Portland are always great matchups," said Smith. "We've enjoyed a long, great rivalry with them and they have a great soccer environment up there. How the Portland and Santa Clara seasons are going has never impacted the quality of our games. There are so many great games in our history that it really energizes both teams to play each other, regardless of how the rest of the season has gone for the two teams."

Cecilia Pedersen leads Portland with four goals and 10 points. Noelle La Prevotte has scored three times and has three assists. Allison Weatherinton leads the team with five assists and has scored twice. Nine Portland players have scored at least one goal and eight have at least one assist.

The Pilots have split time between Hanna De Haan and Rachel Lusby in net. De Haan has allowed nine goals got a 1.25 GAA and has made 17 saves for a .654 save percentage with two shutouts. Lusby has allowed 12 goals for a 1.69 GAA and has made 26 saves for a .684 save percentage with one shutout.
