Andi Tostanoski Named WCC Player of the Week

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara senior goalkeeper Andi Tostanoski was named WCC Player of the Week on Monday. Tostanoski made a total of six saves in two games vs. CSUN and No. 6 Stanford. The biggest save was a stopped penalty kick late in the Broncos 1-0 win over the Cardinal.

"I'm incredibly humbled by the award, but the honor should go out to every one of the girls on my team,' said Tostanoski. "I may have made the save, but what they don't mention is how Stanford only had one shot on goal. Any team that can hold a talented Cardinal team like that deserves recognition. I'm so proud to be a part of such a close knit and hardworking family. Last night we proved that there is no limit and I'm excited to see where we will end up this season."

"I'm very happy for Andi and very proud of her," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "Andi's in her senior year and one of our team captains. What you hope from your senior captains is that they step up both everyday and in your biggest moments. That was a huge moment for us and for a goalkeeper a play like that is sort of a dream come true. To Andi's credit she's focused, prepared, and confident. She played great on Friday and didn't allow a goal and then on Sunday had one of the biggest saves in program history. She's very deserving."

On Friday she picked up five saves and didn't allow a goal against a 6-2-0 CSUN team. On Sunday night she made just one save, but it was huge. Stanford got a penalty kick late in the game that Tostanoski dove to her right to stop. Minutes later SCU scored the game-winner to knock off the Cardinal.

"I just felt it," said Tostanoski on her penalty kick save. "The girl that committed the foul looked at me a little frantically but I knew we were good. I knew what I needed to do and that was the little push we needed to win the game."

This the first win for Santa Clara over Stanford since a 2-0 win at home on Sept. 20, 2006. It is also the Broncos first win over a top-10 team since a 1-0 win vs. No. 3 Pepperdine on Oct. 28, 2011.
