Two Goals from Vass Propel Women's Soccer to 3-1 Win at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. – In the second to last game of the regular season, No. 15 Santa Clara women's soccer topped Pacific by a final of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.  Three early goals, two by Santa Clara and one by Pacific, started the game with a flurry with the Broncos adding an insurance goal in the second half.

Julie Vass led the Broncos (12-5-2, 5-1-2 WCC) with a pair of goals. Janae Gonzalez also scored a goal while Jordan Jesolva and Mariana Galvan had an assist each. The Tigers (3-12-1, 2-6-0 WCC) were led by a goal from Cheyenne Somers on an assist from Alex Hussar. Lena Perry made six saves.

"I'm very happy with the win," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "Scoring three goals today was icing on the cake for us. After the last two games our biggest concern was our finishing and our quality today was much better. We wanted to see quality, low shots on goal and all three of our goals today were low and quality."

In the fifth minute Santa Clara jumped out to the quick 1-0 lead. Gonzalez got a pass from Megan Crosson just inside the box and took a couple touches before sending a low shot to the near post that slipped past the keeper.

Pacific tied the game in the 11th minute off a failed Bronco clear. Hussar stole the ball and dribbled to just outside the six-yard box before sending a pass to Somers who finished the play to make it 1-all.

Not to be outdone, Santa Clara came right back with another goal in the 14th minute. Gonzalez found Galvan into the box and Galvan one-timed a short pass to Vass. Her shot went to the far post and in.

Vass added her second of the game in the 57th minute to pad the Broncos lead at 3-1. Jesolva put a ball into the box that was punched away by the keeper. The deflection went right to the feet of Vass who found the back of the net.

Santa Clara returns to the field Saturday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. at Gonzaga in the final game of the regular season.
