Galvan's Second Double OT Goal in Three Days Lifts Broncos Over Waves

HIGHLIGHT | Galvan's Game Winner

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Coming off a grueling double overtime win, No. 25 Santa Clara women's soccer played two extra periods again on Sunday afternoon vs. Pepperdine and came away with a 1-0 win. Mariana Galvan's game-winner early in the second extra session was her third double overtime goal this year and second of the weekend.

Galvan led the Broncos (9-4-0, 2-1-0 WCC) with the game-ending goal off an assist from Hailai Arghandiwal. Andi Tostanoski picked up two saves. Hannah Seabert was big for the Waves (6-5-2, 1-3-0 WCC) with six saves.

"Credit to Pepperdine who came in here and made us work very hard but you can't say enough about Mariana," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "It was a really good team win today. It's the middle of the season and we have people banged up so for Megan Keeth and Hailai [Arghandiwal], two people that haven't seen a lot of playing time for us, to step up was huge. In the first two conference games we had slow starts but we didn't today. We took our first half performance and made it even better in the second half and overtime. We played 102 minutes very well, which makes us proud. It takes a lot of discipline and mental strength to do those things."

Right out of the gate Santa Clara had a great chance to score in the third minute. Megan Crosson took a shot from the left side of the box and tried to sneak it in far post. The goalkeeper was able to get a finger on the ball and the shot hit the post before being cleared.

Just before the half the Broncos had another good scoring opportunity. Galvan took a through ball in the box but her shot was saved again by the keeper to keep it a scoreless game going into halftime.

Tostanoski came up huge with a save in the 97th minute. Off of a corner, the Waves got a good shot to end the game but Tostanoski dove to her left to stop the attempt and keep Santa Clara alive.

For the second night in a row Galvan played the hero in the second overtime. Arghandiwal sent a short through ball to Galvan in the box and after she took a touch to gather herself, blasted a shot past the keeper for the winner in the 103rd minute.

"We were all exhausted and fighting for every inch," said Galvan. "This was a good team effort and I'm proud of every player. You could see in everyone's faces that we were tired but we put in the effort until the last minute and came away with another double overtime win."

Santa Clara returns to the field Thursday at 2 p.m. in a break from WCC play at Cal.
