Turnbow, Loera Selected in NWSL Draft

CHICAGO – Santa Clara women's soccer had a pair of players taken in the 2021 National Women's Soccer League Draft Wednesday evening.

Kelsey Turnbow was selected in the second round with the 18th overall pick by the Chicago Red Stars and Alex Loera was taken in the fourth round with the 36th overall pick by Kansas City.

Turnbow and Loera will return to the Broncos for the 2021 fall season before joining their professional teams.

"I'm proud of both Kelsey and Alex and very excited for them to become professionals," Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith said. "To be drafted even though the whole league knew they wouldn't be available until after our fall season really speaks to their talent. It's a credit to them that teams were willing to use the draft picks now to secure both of them for the future."

Turnbow has appeared in 67 games in her Bronco career to date while registering 35 goals and 22 assists, good for 92 points. In 2019 she set career highs with 15 goals, 10 assists, 40 points, 71 shots, and 47 shots on goal. She has scored 11 game winners for Santa Clara.

A three-time First Team All-West Region and First Team All-WCC honoree, Turnbow was the WCC Freshman of the Year in 2017 when she also made the WCC All-Freshman team.

Loera has played in 64 games, anchoring the Santa Clara backline while scoring four goals and adding seven assists.

As a junior in 2019, she was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year along with First Team All-West Region and First Team All-WCC. Loera was also First Team All-West Region and First Team All-WCC in 2018 and as a freshman was Second Team All-WCC and WCC All-Freshman.
