Women's Soccer Head Coach Jerry Smith Wins 500th Game

PROVO, UTAH – Santa Clara women's soccer head coach Jerry Smith, in his 34th year at the helm of the Broncos, has become just the third NCAA women's soccer head coach with 500 Division I wins. Smith accomplished the feat Saturday as his team took down No. 13 BYU 2-1.

Smith joins North Carolina head coach Anson Dorrance who has 882 wins and former Connecticut head coach Len Tsantiris who has 570 victories.

Smith took over the Santa Clara program in 1987 and has won double-digit games in all but one season, including five 20-win seasons in a span of six years. His Broncos have taken home 10 West Coast Conference titles and finished in the top two 21 of 28 years while winning 157 conference games.

The Broncos have been to 29 NCAA Tournaments and 10 College Cups under Smith's watch, including winning the 2001 national championship when they took down Dorrance's Tar Heels 1-0. In all, Smith has 54 postseason wins. In 20001, he was named Soccer American Coach of the Year and has been West Region Coach of the Year three time (2005, 2013, 2018) and WCC Coach of the Year seven times (1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2006).

A total of 47 players have earned All-America nods under Smith with an astounding 229 all-conference honors. In addition, Mandy Clemens won the Hermann Trophy in 1999 and Aly Wagner taking home the M.A.C. Herman Trophy in 2001. Three players, Brandi Chastain (1990), Aly Wagner (2001), and Leslie Osborne (2004), have also won the Honda Award during his tenure.

Santa Clara has been ranked in the top-10 at least once in 24 seasons and finished in the top-10 20 times. The Broncos have been ranked at least one week each season with Smith as head coach and finished 31 of those 33 years in the top-25. The team has also won 140 games against ranked competition and has 21 wins against teams that would go on to the College Cup that year.
