Women's Soccer Beats Saint Mary's 2-0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer took care of business in a 2-0 win over Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon at Stevens Stadium.

The Broncos (2-0, 2-0 WCC) were in control much of the game and only a great day from Gaels (0-3-2, 0-2-1 WCC) goalkeeper Taylor Poland kept the score as close as it was.

Poland faced a barrage of shots as Santa Clara attempted 19 with 13 going on target. She finished the day with 11 saves, several of the diving variety that stopped near certain goals.

Kelsey Turnbow and Izzy D'Aquila led the Bronco offense for the second game in a row with Turnbow scoring and adding an assist and D'Aquila finding the back of the net. Julie Doyle and Marika Guay also added an assist each.

The Broncos got on the board just out of halftime to take a 1-0 lead. Turnbow dribbled around the Saint Mary's defense before sending a low pass to D'Aquila who one-timed a shot from just outside the six-yard box.

The second goal came in the 85th minute. Doyle got the ball to Guay in space who found Turnbow just inside the box where she finished inside the far post.

In net, Marlee Nicolos collected her second straight shutout, making one save.

The Gaels nearly snuck one by Nicolos in the 62nd minute but her defense was there to clear it off the line.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 36-3-5 all-time against Saint Mary's and 17-0-3 in the last 20 meetings.
  • Kelsey Turnbow is now one assist away from becoming the eighth Bronco with 25 goals and 25 assists in her career. She has 36 goals and 23 assists.
  • Head coach Jerry Smith picked up his 499th career win, all coming with Santa Clara.
