Ertz Wins Second Career ESPY

NEW YORK – For the second time, Santa Clara women's soccer alum Julie Ertz has won an ESPY. She won the award as Best National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) on Saturday. Her first ESPY was the 2018 Female Athlete of the Award.

Ertz plays professionally for the Chicago Red Stars of the NWSL. The team drafted her third overall in the 2014 College Draft. She was the 2014 Rookie of the Year and Best XI in 2015. In 2016, 2017, and 2018 she was Second XI.

She was recently named one of 18 players on the roster for the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games this summer. In all, the Broncos have had 16 alums play for the U.S. Women's National Team with five playing for other counties as well. Ertz is looking for the 22nd Olympic Medal for a former Santa Clara player.

A three-time First Team All-American for the Broncos, Ertz has 110 caps with the National Team while scoring 20 goals and adding four assists. She has been a part of two World Cup winning squads (2015 and 2019) while playing with the team during the 2016 Olympics.

The 2017 and 2019 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year, Ertz also won the CONCACAF Women's Championship Golden Ball in 2018. She is also a two-time FIFA FIFPro Women's World 11 selection (2015 and 2019) and was IFFHS Women's World Team in 2019.
