Softball Opens 2016 at Aggie Invitational Saturday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball kicks off the 2016 season Saturday at the Aggie Invitational in Davis, Calif. The Broncos play Sacramento State Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and vs. Montana at 1 p.m. On Sunday they face Sacramento State at 10:45 a.m. and UC Davis at 3:15 p.m.

The Broncos finished last season with the most wins since 2006.

As a team Santa Clara hit .255 with 55 doubles, four triples, and 19 home runs. They posted a 4.35 ERA with 111 strikeouts in 328.0 innings.

Ellie Fisher, a 2015 Second Team All-WCC selection and 2016 All-WCC Preseason selection, was one of two Broncos to start all 50 games on the season and led the team in batting average with a .342 mark and on-base percentage at .462. She also led the team with 31 walks, 27 runs scored, and 22 steals, good for second in the WCC, in 27 tries. She added a double, a triple, and nine RBI as well.

Casandra Padilla, who was also named a 2016 All-WCC Preseason Team pick, hit .303 and posted a .415 OBP thanks to 12 walks and 12 HBP. Her efforts landed her First Team All-WCC honors. She hit 11 doubles and three home runs to go with 20 runs scored and 12 RBI.

Geenamarie Bonilla, who was named All-WCC honorable mention, played in all 50 games and made 49 starts. Bonilla batted .282 with two home runs and seven doubles. She added 22 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Gianetta France led the team with six home runs and added four doubles. She knocked in 18 runs while scoring 12.

Ciara Gonzales, All-WCC Honorable Mention, led Santa Clara in ERA (3.32), wins (12), appearances (37), starts (26), complete games (12), shutouts (2), innings pitched (158.0), and strikeouts (48). With just 19 walks allowed, Gonzales finished No. 6 in the country in BB/7. Her 12 wins were the most since 2005.

McCall James threw 74.2 innings as a freshman with a 4.31 ERA. James appeared in 25 games and started 10 with three complete games and one shutout. James also picked up a save to go with two wins and 32 punch-outs.

Sacramento State (28-26) hit .294 as a team last year with 77 doubles, seven triples, and 23 home runs.

On the mound Sacramento State posted a 3.87 ERA in 367.1 innings with 290 strikeouts against 149 walks.

The Hornets return their top hitter in Sasha Margulies who hit .404 with 18 doubles and four home runs. She also drove in 37 runs and scored 32.

Celina Matthias is the top returning pitcher. She appeared in 31 games and made 17 starts while going 10-12 with a 4.10 ERA. Matthias tossed 12 complete games and had two shutouts in 152.0 innings pitched and fanned 95,

Montana (16-34) hit .280 as a team last year with 68 doubles, nine triples, and 28 home runs.

In the circle Montana posted a 4.75 ERA in 319.2 innings with 194 strikeouts and 139 walks.

Lexie Brenneis led the team with a .400 batting average and 11 home runs. She also led the way with 53 RBI while hitting 16 doubles and scoring 24 runs.

Meggie Reitz appeared in 22 games and made 11 starts while throwing 75.0 innings. She was 5-4 with a 5.88 ERA and struck out 43 against 35 walks.

UC Davis (18-31) hit .252 as a team last year with 49 doubles, six triples, and 14 home runs.

The team posted a 4.60 ERA in 315.0 innings with 133 strikeouts and 152 walks.

Christa Castello hit .316 with two doubles and two triples a year ago. She scored a team-high 26 runs and knocked in 20 while swiping five bases in eight tries.

Leah Munden led the team in ERA (3.30), wins (10), appearances (36), starts (25), complete games (8), shutouts (1), innings pitched (155.0), and strikeouts (64).
