STOCKTON, Calif. – In the West Coast Conference opener, Santa Clara softball split a doubleheader at Pacific. The Broncos won the finale 7-5 in eight innings after dropping the opener 7-3 on Sunday.

Game 1
Justine Garner knocked in a single run for the Broncos (5-30, 0-1 WCC) in the first and again in the third to put them on top 2-0.

Garner would finish the game 3-3 with the double and two RBIs while Anne Yates had a pair of hits and scored a run.

The Tigers (18-14, 1-0 WCC) came right back with two in the bottom of the third to make the score 2-all.

Megan Walters (2-2) picked up the win for Pacific in 4 innings out of the bullpen. She allowed four hits and struck out two.

Santa Clara retook the lead briefly in the top of the fourth and knocked out Pacific starter Marissa Young but the Tigers would put up a three-spot in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Megan Walters (2-2) picked up the win for Pacific in 4 innings out of the bullpen. She allowed four hits and struck out two.

The Tigers would add a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to put the Broncos away.

Micaela Vierra (3-13) started for Santa Clara and allowed seven runs on nine hits with five walks and a strikeout while tossing the complete game and getting the loss.

Rachel Sellers knocked in three runs to go with a double and a single for the Tigers. Melanie Habib also added a pair of hits and scored a run.

Game 2
With two down and a runner on third in the top of the eighth, Morgan Modesto hit what would be the game-winning home run to right.

She would finish the day 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

McCall James (3-15) went all 8 innings for Santa Clara and picked up the win. She allowed five runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

"This was a great win for us," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "McCall [James] pitched a great game and got some big outs for us. We also played solid defense. The home run by Morgan [Modesto] was awesome and was so clutch to put us ahead late in the game."

Garner added three more RBIs while also blasting a home run in the top of the third to put Santa Clara (6-30, 1-1 WCC) on top 3-2 after a two-run home run by Sydney Lahners in the first.

In the top of the fourth the Broncos loaded the bases with nobody out. Amanda Delfino knocked in a run with a one-out single and Anne Yates made it 5-1 with a ground out.

Lahners' second blast of the day came in the bottom of the fourth and started a string of single runs for the Tigers (18-15, 1-1 WCC) in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to tie the score at 5-all and set up extra innings.

Lahners was 2-4 in the game with three RBIs.

In 5 innings of relief, Cassidy Gustafson (4-3) got the loss. She allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Santa Clara returns to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the series finale.
