Softball Drops Two Games on Final Day of Aggie Invitational

DAVIS, Calif. – Finishing up the opening weekend of the 2016 season, Santa Clara softball dropped a pair of games at the Aggie Invitational on Sunday. The Broncos (1-3) fell 6-1 to Sacramento State (2-2) and 3-0 to host UC Davis (2-2).

Game 1
It was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings between the Broncos and the Hornets.

In the top of the fifth Kimberly Goulart came into to pitch for McCall James. After two quick outs, the wheels came off for Goulart who allowed the next seven batters to reach base.

With the score 4-0, James came back into the game but a fielding error allowed a fifth run to come across before the inning finally ended.

James (0-1) picked up the loss in 6.1 innings. She allowed one run on eight hits with a strikeout.

Ellie Fisher was 1-3 with a double and an RBI while Kelsie Barnard scored the lone Bronco run of the game.

Savanna Corr (1-0) got the win with 5.0 innings pitched. She allowed one run on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Zamari Hinton, Shelby Johnston, and Sasha Margulies each picked up a pair of hits for the Hornets who had just one extra base hit.

Game 2
Santa Clara again struggled to get anything going offensively in the second game of the day.

After a one out walk in the bottom of the second, Megan Salazar blasted a two-run home run to right center for Davis. It turned out to be all the runs the Aggies would need.

The Broncos answered in the top of the third with their best chance of the game to score. They loaded the bases with no outs and the top of the order coming up but a turn of bad luck led to a line drive double play and no runs would come in.

Micaela Vierra (1-3) tossed 6.0 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts while picking up the loss.

Leah Munden (2-2) pitched a complete game five-hitter with a strikeout.

Salazar was 2-2 with a home run, a walk, and two RBI to lead the offense of the Aggies.
