Softball Struggles on Opening Day of Rebel Classic

Rebel Classic Tournament Central

LAS VEGAS – Santa Clara softball (5-15) fell to Wisconsin (10-9) 8-0 in six innings and UNLV (12-10) 20-1 in five innings on Friday evening at the Rebel Classic.

Game 1
The Badgers scored in the bottom of the first to take a quick 1-0 lead and added two more in the third.

They would score twice in the fifth and walk off in the sixth with a three-spot.

McCall James (2-7) went all 5.2 innings for Santa Clara. She allowed eight runs, six earned, on 12 hits with two walks.

Casandra Padilla picked up a hit and a single and Amanda Delfino had a double.

Taylor-Paige Stewart (6-5) went the distance and allowed four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Sara Novak led the Badger offense with three hits and four RBIs. Samantha Arents added a double of her own and two RBI while the top two batters in Wisconsin's order went a combined 6-7 with a walk and five runs scored.

Santa Clara's best chance to score came in the top of the fourth when back-to-back singles to start the inning put runners on second and third with no outs thanks to a late throw trying to nab the runner at third. The next batter would hit into a triple play to keep the Broncos off the board.

Game 2
Already up 6-0 through three and a half innings, UNLV exploded for 14 in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away.

Santa Clara took a brief lead in the top of the first. Amanda Delfino singled with one out and a sacrifice bunt put her on second. An errant throw by the Rebel pitcher Kwyn Cooper allowed the Broncos to take a 1-0 lead.

Micaela Vierra (3-8) allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in 2 1/3 innings in the start.

Delfino had a hit and scored a run for Santa Clara while Gianetta France also added a single.

Cooper (5-4) allowed an unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts for the Rebels.

Myranda Bueno was 4-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs to lead the UNLV offense. Francesca Foti had four RBIs and scored three runs while three other Rebels each had two RBIs apiece.

Santa Clara returns to action tomorrow at 11:15 a.m. vs. DePaul and at 1:30 p.m. vs. Utah State.
