Late Runs Cost Softball in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball (5-26) fell to UC Santa Barbara (16-15) 5-4 in eight innings and Cal State Bakersfield (7-18) 3-0 on Friday afternoon at the Gaucho Classic II.

Game 1
UC Santa Barbara took advantage of their free base runner in the eighth after the Broncos couldn't. A bunt put the winning run in scoring position and Melanie Menor singled to center to bring in the deciding run.

Micaela Vierra (3-11) got the loss for Santa Clara in 5 1/3 innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Veronika Gulvin (5-8) picked up the win in 4 innings. She allowed a run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Four consecutive hits for the Gauchos led to three runs in the bottom of the sixth and in the bottom of the seventh Jessica Johnston came through with a clutch RBI triple to tie the game at 4-all.

Johnston was 3-4 with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI. Jacqueline Hinojosa had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Kelsie Barnard knocked in the first run of the game with a double in the third and the Broncos added two more in the fourth. Garner would put Santa Clara up 4-0 with a solo home run in the fifth.

Casandra Padilla was 4-4 with an RBI to lead the Broncos' offense. Justine Garner added a solo home run as well.

Game 2
Santa Clara appeared to be out of the inning in the first on a grounder to second but a throwing error allowed a run to come in before Briana Pontecorvo singled to right to make it 2-0.

The Roadrunners would add an insurance run in the sixth.

Amber Mills (4-6) went 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win. She allowed one hit and two walks with a strikeout.

Selena Gonzalez led the offense with a pair of hits and a run scored. Pontecorvo and Jo Larios each added a hit and an RBI.

McCall James (2-13) went the distance for Santa Clara and picked up the loss. She allowed three unearned runs on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Chiara Biagini had lone Bronco hit while Amanda Delfino and Geenamarie Bonilla each had a walk.

Santa Clara returns to action tomorrow vs. Seattle at 9 a.m. and vs. Cal State Bakersfield at 11:15 a.m.
