SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Javier Ruiz Duran's goal in the 65th minute stood as the game-winner to give Santa Clara men's soccer a 1-0 win over crosstown rival San Francisco in a West Coast Conference match on Wednesday night.
Santa Clara (8-5-1, 2-2 WCC) dominated play from the get-go and outshot San Francisco (2-11, 0-4 WCC), 18-8, for the game including a 5-1 advantage on frame. However, it was the Dons who nearly got on the board first when Jonah Van Der Werf's header in the 50th minute was denied by the post.
The Broncos peppered the Dons with shots before Ruiz Duran finally found the back of the net in the 65th minute. Sam Agosti was credited with an assist when he drove to the middle of the defense to draw the Dons players before slipping it wide to Duran Ruiz. The Bronco junior calmly slotted it past a Dons defender and beat goalkeeper Ruben Stuiver to the far post.
It was the third goal of the season for Ruiz Duran to put him in a four-way tie for the team lead.
Bronco goalkeeper Guillem Badenes Mecho recorded his fifth clean sheet of his freshman campaign making one save.
